Fencing in Broadstairs, Kent

Start by identifying where you feel overlooked. You may want to screen a patio from the next garden, create a quieter-looking backdrop to a seating area, or replace an open boundary along a path.

The best choice depends on the direction of those views and how the garden is arranged. A fence that screens someone standing next door may not block the view from an upstairs window. Think about the particular area you want to make more private before choosing a height or style.

Venetian and slatted fencing

Venetian fencing uses horizontal slats to create a contemporary finish. It can work well as a feature along a garden boundary, but the amount of screening depends on the design.

Slat spacing, board arrangement and viewing angle all affect what can be seen through the fence. Single and double slatted panels can give different results, so compare the actual panel construction rather than choosing by the name alone.

We can help you explore the available designs and consider how they will look from your seating area, your windows and the neighbouring side.

Closeboard panels for a solid screen

If your priority is a solid boundary with no deliberately open gaps between boards, closeboard fencing is another option to consider.

The posts, gravel boards and overall height should be chosen alongside the panels. Where a fence meets an existing wall or gate, those connections also need to form part of the plan.

Decorative panels and trellis

You may not need the same level of screening around the whole garden. Decorative panels or trellis can help define a separate area or give part of the boundary a more open finish.

Tell us where privacy matters most and where you would prefer to retain a view. We can discuss a combination that suits the space.

Planning a longer garden boundary

A long fence run needs careful measurement. The number of bays depends on the panel dimensions, posts, corners, gates and any shorter sections needed at the ends.

Changes in ground level affect the layout too. With horizontal slatted fencing, the way neighbouring panels align or step down can make a noticeable difference to the finished appearance.

Before ordering materials or requesting installation, consider:

• Where the fence will start and finish.
• Whether any existing posts or walls will remain.
• The position and width of gates.
• Slopes, steps or changes in garden level.
• Access for bringing in materials.

An approximate length is useful for an initial enquiry. Final quantities and the installation layout need to reflect the actual site measurements.

Fencing for exposed gardens in Broadstairs

Broadstairs’ coastal setting means some boundaries are more exposed than others. A garden sheltered by buildings can have different requirements from an open plot facing sea winds.

A slatted appearance does not, on its own, tell you how a panel will perform in wind. The amount of open space, fence height, posts, foundations and fixings all matter. Greater screening can also mean less airflow, so privacy and exposure should be considered together.

For properties affected by salt-laden air, suitable metal fittings are another part of the specification. Mention any previous problems with corroded hinges, loose posts or storm-damaged panels when you contact us.

Historic boundaries in Reading Street and Broadstairs

Reading Street has a designated conservation area, as do other parts of Broadstairs and St Peter’s. An address near one of these areas should be checked against the mapped boundary rather than assuming the same rules apply everywhere.

If you are altering an older wall, gate or railing, its historic significance may need consideration. Listed properties and certain associated boundary structures can have additional protection, and the height and position of a proposed fence can also affect permission requirements.

Check your property’s circumstances with Thanet District Council before removing a historic boundary or committing to a design. The council provides conservation area maps and guidance and information on when planning permission may be needed.
