Fencing in Canterbury, Kent

Access is worth discussing early, particularly where a rear garden can only be reached through a narrow passage, a shared entrance or the house.

A photograph of the route into the garden can be as useful as a photograph of the fence itself. Include any tight corners, steps or low openings that could affect how materials are brought in and old fencing is taken out.

Let us know what needs to stay in place, such as established planting, paving or a garden wall. These details help define the work before the installation is arranged.

Historic boundaries and conservation areas in Canterbury

At an older Canterbury property, an existing boundary may be part of the home’s historic character. Before replacing a wall, gate or railing, check its status and whether retaining or repairing it would be appropriate.

Listed-building protection can extend beyond the main house to certain associated structures. Conservation-area controls and other planning restrictions may also affect proposed changes. A new fence beside an old wall should therefore be planned around the property’s circumstances.

Canterbury City Council provides a planning information map and guidance on listed buildings. Check the requirements for your address before removing a historic boundary or finalising a replacement.

Once those requirements are understood, we can discuss fence styles and installation options that suit the setting.

Working around mature trees and established gardens

Trees and large shrubs can make a garden attractive and private, but they also need to be considered when positioning new fence posts. Roots, trunks and future growth may affect where supports can go.

Tell us about any trees close to the boundary before the work is planned. If excavation or clearance could affect a tree, its condition and protection status should be checked, with advice from a qualified arboriculturist where needed.

Canterbury City Council explains how to check for protected trees and apply for tree works. This is particularly relevant where a tree has a Tree Preservation Order or stands within a conservation area.

What affects the cost of fencing in Canterbury?

The length of the boundary, fence height, panel style, posts, gravel boards and gates all contribute to the price. Access, ground conditions and removal of existing materials can affect the installation cost too.
