A Sandwich Job: Picket fencing along the Rope Walk

With a new puppy on the way, the owners of a listed property on the Rope Walk in Sandwich wanted an enclosed garden space. They asked Cave Fencing for a 25-bay picket fence, with a wood store included in the project.

The brief combined a practical need for an enclosed area with fencing that would suit the property’s setting.

Garden fence installation in Sandwich

The best starting point is what you want your fence to achieve. Screening a seating area, defining a front garden and enclosing a space for a dog each call for different choices.

We supply fence panels, timber and concrete posts, gravel boards, trellis and garden gates. We can discuss the appearance, privacy and practical requirements of your boundary, then help you choose the materials for the installation.

Closeboard fencing for garden privacy

Closeboard panels are a practical option when you want a solid boundary around a garden or patio. Consider where you need screening, how the fence will meet existing walls or gates, and whether the same height is needed along the entire run.

We can help you compare panel sizes and finishes, together with suitable posts and gravel boards.

Picket fencing and enclosed garden spaces

Picket fencing defines an area while keeping a more open view through the garden. It can suit front boundaries, separate sections of a garden or form an enclosure around a particular space.

If you are fencing an area for a puppy or dog, tell us at the outset. The spacing between pickets, gaps beneath the fence, gate arrangement and overall height need to be considered together. What is suitable will depend on the animal and how the space will be used.

Replacing fence panels and posts

A damaged panel does not always mean the whole fence needs replacing. Equally, fitting new panels between weakened posts may leave the underlying problem unresolved.

Share photographs of the affected section and the adjoining fence. We can discuss whether a partial replacement is practical, which components need attention and how the new section could meet the existing boundary.

Garden gates and side access

A gate should work with the fence and the way you move around your property. Think about the opening width needed for bins, bicycles or garden equipment, where the gate will swing and how it will be secured.

Include any new or replacement gates in your enquiry so they can be considered as part of the complete job.

Fencing at listed properties and within Sandwich’s conservation area

Sandwich’s historic setting makes it particularly important to understand the boundary you already have. An older wall, gate or set of railings may contribute to a property’s character, and some boundary structures have protection in their own right or through their association with a listed building.

Before planning to remove an old boundary, check whether it should be retained or repaired. Even if your own home is not listed, a boundary shared with a neighbouring listed property may require additional consideration.

Check the position of your boundary

Within the area covered by the Sandwich Walled Town Conservation Area’s Article 4 direction, certain works to gates, fences and walls facing a highway, waterway or open space are subject to additional planning controls.

The requirements depend on the address, the position of the boundary and the proposed work. Check with Dover District Council before removing an existing structure or committing to a new design. The council publishes Sandwich conservation area documents and a map of the area affected.

Once any permission requirements are clear, we can help you compare fencing options that meet your practical needs and suit the property.

What affects the cost of a new fence in Sandwich?

The cost of installation depends on the length and height of the fence, panel style, posts, gravel boards and any gates. Ground conditions, access to the garden and removal of existing materials can also affect the work involved.

When comparing quotes, check whether each includes the same work: materials, installation, removal of the old fence and disposal. Confirm whether VAT is included too. These details help you compare the total cost of the job.

If you have a budget in mind, tell us when you enquire. We can discuss which choices affect the price and where suitable alternatives may be available.

Fencing in Sandwich: common questions

Can you replace one section without replacing the whole fence?

In some cases, yes. It depends on the condition of the adjoining panels and posts, their dimensions and how the new section will connect. Photographs help us assess whether a partial replacement is a sensible option.

Do I need permission to replace my fence?

That depends on its height and position, any planning conditions, and whether listed-building or Article 4 restrictions apply. Do not assume that replacing a fence at the same height automatically avoids the need for permission. Check the requirements for your property with Dover District Council before work begins.

Can I keep an existing garden wall and add fencing?

This needs to be assessed for the individual property. The wall’s condition, ownership and heritage status all matter, as does how the proposed fencing would be supported. An existing wall should not automatically be treated as a suitable support for a new fence.

Is picket fencing suitable for a puppy?

It can be suitable in some circumstances, but the design needs to account for the puppy’s size, likely growth and behaviour. Picket spacing, gaps at ground level and the gate all need consideration. Tell us about your pet when discussing the fence so those requirements form part of the brief.

Will the quote include removing my old fence?

Let us know that removal is required when you enquire. The quote should make clear whether taking down the old fencing and disposing of it are included.

Can I buy fencing materials without installation?

Yes. Cave Fencing sells panels, posts, gravel boards, gates and other fencing materials for customers who want to carry out the installation themselves. Browse our range or contact us for help choosing the components for your project.
