Start with what you want the fence to achieve.
You might want to enjoy a patio with fewer overlooking views, replace a damaged boundary or frame a front garden without hiding its planting. The right style and height follow from that purpose.
| What you need | Where to start |
|---|---|
| More screening around a rear garden | Solid closeboard panels at a suitable height |
| An open front garden boundary | Low round-top picket panels |
| A low fence with a solid face | Shorter closeboard panels |
| Replacement panels between existing posts | Match the actual opening, panel thickness and support arrangement |
| A decorative or planted section | Explore trellis and suitable fence toppers |
| A complete new boundary | Plan panels, posts, gravel boards and gates together |
If you are unsure, send us photographs of the space and tell us what you want to change. Our advice starts with your garden and the job the fence needs to do.
Closeboard panels use overlapping vertical featheredge boards to create a solid face. They suit side and rear boundaries where screening is a priority and provide a consistent backdrop for planting, lawns and seating areas.
Our closeboard range includes nominal 3ft, 4ft, 5ft and 6ft heights. This gives you options for a low garden division, a taller boundary or a layout that changes height along its length.
When comparing panels, look at the construction behind the boards as well as the front. Backing rails, framing, fixings and timber treatment all contribute to the product you are buying.

Picket fencing marks the edge of a garden while allowing views through and above it. It is a natural choice for front gardens, paths and planted borders where openness is part of the appeal.
Our round-top picket panel gives the boundary a softer outline and a traditional timber finish.
Picket fencing offers limited privacy. For pet containment, the height, gaps between boards, ground clearance and gate arrangement all need to suit the animal’s size and behaviour.
Trellis can introduce an open section above a solid fence or create a framework for planting elsewhere in the garden.
A fence topper changes both the appearance and the overall height of the boundary. It also needs suitable supports, particularly if climbing plants will grow across it.
For a new fence, plan the trellis at the same time as the panels and posts. For an existing boundary, check the condition and height of the supports before adding anything.
Browse garden trellis or explore fence topper trellis.
Height affects privacy, light and how enclosed the garden feels. Consider the fence from the patio, the house and the neighbouring ground level before deciding.
| Nominal panel height | What to consider |
|---|---|
| 3ft | A low boundary that keeps views open above it |
| 4ft | More definition while retaining an open outlook |
| 5ft | Taller screening, with the final height planned around any gravel board |
| 6ft | Greater screening at garden level, with suitable posts and foundations |

The size in feet is a nominal description. Always check the actual dimensions of the chosen product before ordering.
Many timber panels are described as 6ft wide, but actual dimensions can differ. A panel measuring 1800mm wide is not interchangeable with one measuring 1830mm without checking the opening and fitting arrangement.
Height needs the same care. The finished boundary may include a gravel board beneath the panel and trellis above it.
For example, an 1800mm-high panel above a fully exposed 150mm gravel board creates a combined component height of 1950mm. That total still needs to be considered alongside ground levels and the post design.
Choose the finished fence height first, then select the components to achieve it.
Check any property-specific requirements before creating or increasing a boundary.
A replacement panel is only part of the repair.
Inspect the posts, fixings and gravel boards before ordering. A new panel will not resolve a leaning support, damaged concrete slot or deteriorated timber post.
Measure each bay at the top, middle and bottom. For slotted concrete posts, include the space inside the slots when establishing the required panel width. Check the panel thickness against the slot width too.
Also consider how the panel will reach the opening. Narrow passages, overhanging branches and low structures can affect whether a full panel can be carried through and lifted into place.
Send us the measurements and a photograph if you would like help checking a replacement.
The useful details are in the specification.
Look at the boards, backing rails, frame, connections and treatment. Compare actual dimensions and photographs of both faces, especially if one side exposes the supporting rails.
A “heavy-duty” description is most useful when it is supported by clear construction details. Likewise, pressure treatment helps protect timber, but does not make a panel waterproof or remove the need to look after the fence.
We can help you compare the products and supporting materials around the requirements of your project.
A well-planned boundary brings the panels, supports and base together.
Choose posts for the fence height, loading, ground conditions and exposure.
Wooden fence posts provide a coordinated timber appearance and suitable fixing options. Concrete fence posts offer supports that do not rot, with slotted designs for compatible panels.
A gravel board separates the panel from direct ground contact and forms the lower edge of the fence.
Choose between timber and concrete according to the appearance, fitting arrangement and exposure. Include its visible height when planning the boundary.
Position gates before setting out the panel bays. Allow space for the opening, supports, fittings and the items you need to move through it.
Explore garden gates and discuss the entrance alongside your fence.
Measure each straight section separately and mark corners, gates and other openings.
For a new fence, the calculation must account for post dimensions and the fixing arrangement. Dividing the boundary length by the panel width gives only a starting estimate.
A simple, independent straight run of five panel bays normally needs six posts. Gates, shared supports and changes in direction can alter the layout and post types.
Before ordering, sketch the boundary and identify where any shorter sections will fall. Planning those sections can improve the appearance and reduce avoidable cutting.
Garden conditions influence the whole fence design.
Solid panels catch wind, so exposed boundaries need suitable posts, foundations and connections. A stronger panel alone cannot compensate for weak supports.
On sloping ground, rectangular panels may need to step between posts. This changes the top line and can leave varying spaces beneath the fence. Ground that is higher on one side also needs consideration; standard fencing should not automatically be used to retain soil.
Tell us about previous storm damage, level changes, old foundations or nearby trees before the work is planned.
The panel price is one part of the budget.
Allow for posts, gravel boards, fixings, foundation materials, gates and delivery. For a fitted fence, removal of existing materials, access and ground conditions also affect the work.
When comparing options, check what each quote includes and whether the panel specifications match. A clearly defined materials list helps you understand the finished fence you are paying for.
If you need help budgeting, send us your postcode, approximate boundary length, preferred style and photographs.
Cave Fencing is a family-run business based in Monkton, supplying homeowners and trade customers across Kent.
Choose delivery or collection from our yard. Before arranging delivery, consider vehicle access, the unloading position and how the panels will be moved into the garden.
Let us know about restricted parking, steps or narrow access, and check the delivery terms when placing your order.
We can discuss the complete job, from the condition of the existing boundary to the final panel and gate arrangement.
Share photographs showing the fence line and access into the garden. Include the approximate length, the height you want and anything that needs to remain in place, such as planting, paving or a wall.
Your quote should identify the agreed materials and work, including any removal and disposal.

Solid closeboard panels are a useful starting point. Choose the height around the view you want to screen and the ground levels on either side. A taller fence may still leave views from upper windows.
No. Check the actual product dimensions, particularly when replacing panels between existing posts. Similar nominal sizes do not guarantee the same fit.
Often, if the supporting posts and gravel boards are sound and the new panel is compatible. Expect some colour difference between fresh timber and weathered fencing.
Some timber panels can be shortened and reframed, but the construction and support must remain suitable. Check the individual product before cutting and follow the treatment instructions for exposed timber.
Use a compatible exterior timber coating and follow its preparation and drying requirements. The timber must be in a suitable condition before application.
Check the product listing and basket contents. Plan posts, gravel boards and fixings separately unless the selected product explicitly includes them.
We supply trade customers as well as homeowners. Visit our trade account page for details.
